First Photos After The First Photography Class. . . .

This past Saturday, while we were waiting to leave for the Botanical Gardens, I pulled out my camera to try out some of the new tricks that I learned at last Monday's photography class. I took all of these pictures over the course of 5-10 minutes. I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I can't wait to see what I learn in the rest of the classes in this course!!

Do tell...

I am dying to know the tricks :)

I can't get over their clothes!

They are so completely adorable.

Thanks, JoLynn!

Daune -- From what I understand from my last lesson, which is rudimentary, you should always overexpose light-colored things and underexpose dark-colored things. So, I overexpose the kids' faces and get rid of those pesky shadows. I think I can overexpose them even more, and plan on doing a little experimentation soon!

Ever since I found out that #4 is a girl, I've gone a little nutty on the girl clothes since I know I'll be using them again. I can't control myself!!

I hope you're doing well. :)

I have been following your blog for a few months now and I have to say your children are some of the most beautifully expressive and photogenic I have ever seen. They are simply angelic.

God bless you all...and your little one on the way!

Heather, are you overexposing by adjusting the shutter speed or aperture?

Or do you mean you are altering the exposure after the picture is taken, with an editing program such as photoshop?

Hey, Daune!! I usually overexpose using shutter speed. You can overexpose with your aperture, too, but when I do that and I'm trying to get more than one kid in the picture, sometimes I find it blurs out the other kid too much. But, I'd use aperture instead if I was just taking portraits of one kid at a time.

My instructor explained it this way, which applies whenever your subject is not in direct sunlight -- you have 5 tones (not colors): white, light, medium, dark, and black. If you're taking a picture where your main subject is white (i.e. snow pictures), overexpose by 2 stops. Lights (i.e. caucasian kids) overexpose by 1 stop, medium leave it as metered by your camera, darks underexpose by 1 stop, black underexpose by 2 stops. You have to be using spot metering to do this (not matrix, etc.), and for the kids I focus on their foreheads, meter off that, then snap the shot. So far, it's made an amazing difference in all of my pictures, though the ones in direct sunlight leave something to be desired.

There's just so much to know with photography, and I just know so little. . . . One day. . . .

P.S. I just figured out yesterday that you have a new website for your blog -- which explains why I was only seeing updates on FB!! I've adjusted in my feed so I can stay on top of it now.

oh that funny! I tried to make a few announcements before the switch but I have noticed that a lot of people still have the old link on their feeds! I figured a few would fall through the cracks!

I really need to re-take a photog. class with my digital. It's been so many years So I took one and camera's have changed so much.

And there is the matter of trying to keep the camera prepared when you have a tribe of kids running in all different directions---some in the sun---some in the shade...

You really have to be quick with your adjustments! Thanks for the info :)

OMG -- you have to be so quick with the adjustments. My most recent plan is to set things and just let it go and invest in Photoshop. Argh. I'm going to have to figure something out!!
