Musical Family

The kids are very into music lately.  They will play their drums, piano, or whatever else, and sing songs – typically, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”  It’s adorable.

It’s amazing how natural the big girls seem on the piano.  I have a feeling that we have lots of piano lessons in our future.

Also on the theme of musical performances, Piper and Rosemary now have new names – stage names if you will – Sparkle and Shimmer.  Piper came up with them.  They don’t quite seem to work for classical pianists. . . .  Hmmmmmm.  Maybe they’ll go back to their given names some time very soon.

Let’s Play Best Friends

Piper and Rosemary continue to grow closer and closer.  It’s amazing to watch the bond that they are developing.  I’m so glad that they have each other.  Sometimes I worry that Henry or Penelope will feel left out, but then the two of them are very close, too, and seem to have their own special bond.  I don’t think there’s much of a bond that compare to that of identical sisters, though. . . .

On Sunday, before we left for church, the Piper told Rosemary, “Let’s play best friends.”  Apparently this involves holding hands and swinging in a big circle.

It looks like a lot of fun.  Maybe they’ll let me play best friends with them some day.

Panning for Gemstones

About this time last year we took the kids to DeSoto Caverns.  They had a blast.  We actually had some activity passes left over from that trip, which expire one year after purchased.  With two days left, this past Saturday we headed out to DeSoto Caverns to use the rest of our activity passes before they expired.

The kids were SO excited!

The first thing we did was ride the train.

I’m not sure exactly what happened with the train, and I assume it was because so many people were in the back of it, but it jack-knifed while we were on it.  It scared the crap out of me.  I grabbed two kids and Gary grabbed two kids and we just held on until we got the train stopped.  No harm, no foul, but that could have been awful.

Then we stood in line for 15 minutes to go on the tour of the Caverns.

We lasted about 2 minutes inside the caverns, and left.

Then, after the pool, we participated in the kids’ most favorite activity ever – panning for gemstones!!!

That is seriously all the kids wanted to do.  We took a break to eat a picnic lunch, then went back to panning for gemstones.  Penelope didn’t quite get it.  Although the kids were finding their gemstones and saving them in their little plastic bags, Penelope found her gemstones and dropped them into the water, one by one. . . .

DSC_6902DSC_6913DSC_6918DSC_6922DSC_6928DSC_6931DSC_6936DSC_6941DSC_6945

The kids were very, very serious about the gemstones!!

I think everyone had fun.  And we learned a lesson from the last trip (and the resulting ER trip) – the grown-ups hold the gemstones on the way home!!!!

Lots of Doctor Appointments

Last week was the big kids’ 4 year check-up appointment, and this week was Henry’s follow-up with the neurosurgeon and Penelope’s appointment with the allergy doctor.

We had Henry’s appointment yesterday afternoon.  Long story short, Henry has been released.  The holes in his skull appear to be doing fine, and since the last appointment we’ve had with the neurosurgeon, we’ve learned that both my dad (Papa) and I have holes in our heads.  I have one and Dad has two.  That made the neurosurgeon feel much better that what we have going on is a genetic thing instead of a more serious problem.  Henry had some x-rays, we talked to the doctor, and we were done.

Because Henry’s appointment was downtown in the afternoon, I knew we wouldn’t have much time to get him home and get back to work.  So, I decided to just bring Henry with me to the office to reduce driving time.  We grabbed an ice cream treat then headed to my office.

At some point, Henry started really looking around at all the pictures on my office wall.  He told me, “You have too much kids in your room.”  I’ve always wondered at what point I’m going to cross that line into having too many photos of my kids in my office, and I’ve decided to cross that line proudly.  Henry is apparently not as proud.

My friend Amanda happened to have some dinosaurs in her office, and brought them by for Henry.  They were a huge hit.

Henry then spent a little time flipping through the Alabama Code.  It was pretty funny, actually.  He very seriously studied a few different volumes for quite a while.

I was surprised that I actually got some work done while Henry was there.  He really kept himself entertained.  I think he had a good time – I know he was ready for bed last night!

Penelope’s appointment with the allergist was this morning.  She was skin tested for a nut panel, an environmental panel, and a shellfish mix.  The only things that she reacted to were peanuts and hazelnuts.  The next step was to draw blood to see how allergic she is, but despite four of us attempting to hold her down, we couldn’t get her still enough to draw enough blood out of either arm.  She was a maniac.  She was yelling all sorts of things, like “No!” and “Stop!” and “Go home!”  As soon as we let her up, she demanded, “Suckers!”  She got 3 suckers – and we got an order to go to Children’s Hospital for the bloodwork.  I have no idea what they’re going to do to get the blood drawn, but I guess we’ll find out when we go.

Other than that, Penelope handled it all quite well.  I got a kick out of the nurses asking her how old she was.  She’d hold up her hand and say, “Four!”  She seriously thinks she is as old as the big kids!!

We will discuss the results of the bloodwork about two weeks after it’s drawn and then will determine our strategy.  Hopefully she will outgrow the allergy, but we’ll just have to see.  Until then, no nuts and we’ll be keeping an epi-pen handy at all times.

Here’s to hoping that we avoid doctor’s appointments for a while after all of these recent ones. . . .

Bug Hunting | Our 4th of July Activity

Gary and I tossed around a lot of ideas as to what we were going to do on the 4th of July – watch fireworks, go to the swimming pool, eat barbecue, and all other sorts of typical 4th of July activities.  As soon as the kids woke up, though, they wanted to do one thing and one thing only – go hiking so that they could hunt for bugs.  Nana and Papa gave everyone some bug hunting “jars” for the big kids’ birthday, and they were very anxious to use them.  We grabbed some fried chicken on the way to Tannehill State Park for our day of fun (it really is remarkable how well fried chicken keeps for a bit in a hot car).

Before we left, we explained that if you brought your bug jar that you carried your bug jar.  Initially, everyone seemed to understand that concept.

DSC_6667DSC_6670

At some point, however, Piper got too tired to carry her bug jar.  She asked me to carry it first, and I said no.  She turned up the pitifulness and asked Gary – he also said no and reminded them that if they bring it they carry it.  Then Piper turned to Rosemary and asked her to carry her bug jar . . . and Rosemary said, “Sure!”  I don’t think Rosemary was expecting to be carrying EVERYONE’s bug jars, but she did. . . .

We didn’t find any bugs.  However, Rosemary informed us that “rocks are a type of bug” and they found a few rocks for their bug jars.

Piper eventually got so tired from carrying her bug jar and hunting for bugs that she just sat down and said that she couldn’t make it.

Luckily, she recovered and was able to make it back to the picnic tables by holding my hand for the rest of the hike.  Piper wasn’t the only one that was exhausted by the time we made it to the picnic tables.

After we ate, we fed the rest of our biscuits to the ducks.  Penelope was a little fearless in feeding the ducks.  This is what I did during the duck-feeding:

It was a fun day!  Maybe bug-hunting isn’t a traditional way to spend the 4th of July, but it may be our new tradition.
